You will be asked to consider whether you would want children in any future scenario — including bereavement or relationship breakdown. This is standard good clinical practice, not a barrier to proceeding.
Preparation on the Day
No general anaesthetic means no fasting required. You should shower on the morning of the procedure. Wear comfortable, supportive underwear. Arrange for someone to drive you home — you should not drive on the day of the procedure.
Shaving the scrotal area the evening before or on the morning is advisable.
The Procedure — Under Local Anaesthetic
The procedure takes approximately 15–30 minutes. Local anaesthetic is injected into the scrotum — you will feel a brief stinging sensation, after which the area becomes numb. A small incision or puncture is made to access the vas deferens on each side.
A small section of the vas deferens is removed from each side. The ends are then sealed — typically by cauterisation, ligation and division, or both. The skin is closed with a dissolvable suture or small dressing.
Recovery
You may feel some mild discomfort, bruising and swelling for a few days — this is normal. Rest for 48 hours. Avoid strenuous activity for one week. Return to desk work after 2–3 days. Sexual intercourse can resume after one week, but contraception must continue until semen tests confirm success.
Semen Testing — Confirming Success
Vasectomy is not immediately effective — sperm remain in the reproductive tract for some time. A semen test is required at 12 weeks post-procedure (and after at least 20 ejaculations) to confirm that no sperm are present. Contraception must continue until this test confirms a clear result.
